Native planting guide
Nillumbik is widely recognised for its rich and varied flora, with nearly 800 different species of indigenous plants recorded in the Shire.
Fortunately, many of these species make ideal garden plants as they are adapted to local conditions, are highly ornamental, and fit beautifully within the Nillumbik landscape.
Benefits of establishing native plants in your garden include that they require little maintenance to keep healthy in Melbourne’s variable climate, they grow quickly and often flower in their first season, and they attract and provide food and shelter for local fauna.
The Live Local Plant Local brochure below, published by Nillumbik Shire Council in 2014, provides information to landowners on indigenous plants commonly found in Nillumbik that are suitable for garden plantings.
